Trivia:

Did you know that from the ‘50s to early ‘70s, the lone award giving body in showbiz was the Filipino Academy of Movies, Arts & Sciences (FAMAS)? That time to be included in the top finalists in every category meant a big honor and the nominees were the best, be it in acting, film direction, cinematography and musical score.

Later, the FAMAS people opted to put the Hall of Fame those who won five times. They were Joseph Estrada, Eddie Garcia, Charito Solis and Nora Aunor for their performances, movie directors Gerry de Leon, Ishmael Bernal and Lino Brocka, cameraman Felipe Sacdalan and music scorer Tony Maiquiz.

Those who were accorded accolades abroad were Charito Solis (Dahil sa Isang bulaklak) for best actress at the Asian Film Festival, Nora Aunor (Himala) at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, Gerry de Leon (Ifugao) at the Tokyo Film Festival, Ishmael Bernal (Himala), best director at the Berlin Film Festival and Lino Brocka: best megger for Insiang at the Cannes Film Festival.

The first FAMAS controversy ignited when for the first time awards had been handed to comedy stuffs. Gloria Romero and Fred Montilla garnered best actress, best actor for Dalagang Ilocana and Bondying, respectively. Innuendoes broke out from disappointed groups. Thus the producer of the said movies the late Dr. Jose Perez ordered Gloria and Fred to return their trophies. Subsequently, authorities claimed that in U.S. and European movies, comedians got acclaimed in rib-tickling roles. The fiasco ended, with both Gloria and Fred did accept back their awards.

Eventually, in the ‘70s the respected group of movie critic-writers founded the Urian Award or Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino that many opined was better, justifiable body for recognition of excellence. The body came out at the time accusations were thrown to some FAMAS officers and members. Allegedly, they chose winners in return for huge sum. More or less, the malevolent effect lessened the credibility of FAMAS.

Sadly, in the early 2000 chaos among the officers and members had divided the FAMAS into two groups, composed of the veterans and the new ones on the other side. Based on what transpires nowadays, the Urian, PMPC Star Awards, Entertainment Press Awards and other bodies composed of people from various society have seemingly placed the FAMAS down the ladder of fame. Such a very disheartening occurrence, what with this writer was once active officer of the FAMAS for many years.

Coco Martin’s presence to support Sen. Grace Poe’s presidential trail in Bacolod City led others to conclude that he got huge sum in return from Grace. Several people opine too that the closeness of Coco to Grace’s mom Susan Roces who’s his co-star in the TV series Ang Probinsyano influenced him.

“Beforehand, I’ve been impressed with Grace’s advocacy, altruism and sincerity not to hood-wink voters, more than that, I read her platforms, I’d like to convince many of my right choice for president that’s why I’m doing it without material consideration.” Coco buttressed to my source.

In the case of Susan she expounded that everyone has the freedom to choose the right candidates. But ever since, Coco admires Grace for her advocacy even as a senator. At that, if it happens Coco campaigns for Grace’s presidential rival, Susan won’t take it against him. Their friendship would remain intact.
