The William and Kate Royal wedding: the afterfacts

By | May 1, 2011

After the pomp, pageantry and splendor of the April 29 Royal wedding, life will never be the same for Katherine Kate Middleton. He will no longer be an ordinary Briton nor shall we say a commoner.
She is now a member of the Royal family. As the wife of Prince William, she will assume the official title of Her Royal Highness (HRH) Princess William of Wales or she could, in all likelihood
be known as Princess Catherine of Wales.
The late Diana, Princess of Wales was never called “Princess Diana “. Instead when she got married to Prince Charles of Wales she became HRH the Princess of Wales.
According to royal watchers, only those women who were titled from birth or of royal lineage or ancestry can exclusively use the term “Princess“ together with their given name. This meant daughters of the Sovereign or of a prince.

CAN PRINCE WILLIAM SAVE THE MONARCHY ? Great Britain has one of the oldest surviving monarchies in the world but of late, there have been talks of a movement to abolish and replace it with a Republican form of government.
As in other royalty throughout the world like in Japan (which is the world’s oldest ) , Denmark and Thailand among others, they wield some degree of power and influence towards the subjects aside from reverence and respect. But times are changing. Somehow, some of them have not jived with the demands of modern times and largely to the pressures of modern politics and democracy.
Some believe that Prince William, who is well loved by his countrymen and second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, can save the British monarchy.
Mary Carol Herwood, a researcher on royals, said the move to do away with the British monarchy “ would not take place while Queen Elizabeth II reigns, as she is extremely popular with her people..
No so, however, is Prince Charles. An outcry against the monarchy may well occur if Prince Charles succeeds her mother and the movement may swell to create an English Republic “.
With the show of affection and approval for Prince William and her Princess Catherine during their wedding, many believe this further strengthens the belief that he may leap frog to become the next King of England.
“Saving the monarchy is a major motivation of the Royal family. We may see KING WILLIAM V sooner than expected “ said Heywood.
A recent survey among Britons showed that 56% prefer Prince William to be the next King. And Kate might become Queen Catherine !
