‘noynoying and p’noying’

By | March 30, 2012

So hayun, a group of protesters joining the jeepney operators/drivers in their strike or ‘caravan’ some three weeks ago coined a new word. ‘Noynoying’ daw ang tawag sa asta nilang parang walang cares in the world- para daw si Pangulong Noynoy na parang di affected sa napakalalaking problema ng bayan at walang ginagawang paraan to address these.
The jeepney operators/ drivers’ protest came at the heel of another gasoline price hike. They appealed to the President to reduce the VAT for these products so that the price hikes would not be so high and so frequent. The government did not grant their request. Meantime, students from various universities here in MetroManila joined with their sympathy rallies. Instead of the usual barrage of slogans and rally chants, hayun sila at humilata sa kalsada, sa mga hagdang semento ng mga buildings at nagposing ala-relaxed para bang nasa buhanginan ng Boracay, nag ala- Cleopatra and declared ‘This is Noynoying, alang problema, alang pagod sa pagkilos, ala lang talaga.’
For sure, ang sakit nun for PNoy, his administration family and his kin and supporters. And when they do this, mas mabilis ang pagkalat- uso kasi. Nauso bigla ang ‘Noynoying.’
Sugod naman ang administration PR people- may newspaper photos showing PNoy in his office, hmmmm, malalim ang pag- iisip, supposedly para sa kapakanan ng bayan, hindi sa current flame na si Grace Lee. In his speeches before various audiences, sinabi naman ng Presidente that he is not affected at all by the word ‘Noynoying’ because in truth, dami naman ding naging accomplishments ng kanyang administrasyon. And he enumerates these maski pahapyaw man lang.
Tama naman siguro ang reaksyong ito- to acknowledge that he knows about the name- calling, to say he is not affected and to explain in short terms, why the definition is not true.
The public has reacted in two ways. Sa website ng ABS- CBN news, may nag react and I include this word for word:

haha nakakatuwa talaga mga Pinoy, pagnakawan mo sasaludo pa sayo, gawan mo ng paraan para mataas ang antas ng pamumuhay aabusuhin ka at lalagyan ng kung ano anong label, etong mga reklamador na yan, ano naman ang naitulong sa bayan bukod sa magreklamo..ABER…kailangan ng taga subo…’ hmmnn…..
At ano po ang say nyo? Di ba may bahid ng katotohanan? Talk is cheap, sabi ng iba.
Two officials defended the President. Vice President Binay na alam ng marami na medyo pinagseselosan na ngayon ng marami sa Partidong pinagmulan ni Pnoy because of his seemingly unstoppable rise in popularity said whatever his image is now, the thing that makes him appreciated by the public is due to the President because he is part of the President’s team.
Roxas gave his own definition:
Noynoying is- somebody who is careful about the people’s money, somebody who does not borrow and spend recklessly; is somebody who will not allow politics to tramp on the people’s interests. It is their interest which will always come ahead of politics’.
Roxas went on to talk about a recent NEDA (National Economic Development Authority)marathon meeting presided by Pnoy- 8 hours straight discussing 13 national development projects scheduled for implementation. Roxas said the President fleshed out, together with his executive family, details of each program and the practicality of each step needed to be taken for the successful completion of each.
And lastly, Roxas said Noynoying is for the good governance policy that this administration has started- yun bang sinabi noong campaign days na ‘daang matuwid.’ Paghabol sa mga tiwali, pagbibigay daan for good investments and investors, a level playing field where businesses are treated fairly and provided an atmosphere where they can thrive and the nation thrives with them.
Ako naman, if I were made to define Noynoying, I would include all qualities of the Pnoy which are known to the public- oo nga naman, sya ang unang Presidente to do concrete action against those accused of crimes against the citizenry (graft, corruption, etc). Siguro sobra talaga tayong maawain as a people kaya’t for many of us, nasasabi nating’ aba, sobra naman lupit ni Pnoy.’ Pero kaylan pa kaya natin sisimulan to run after the abusados? We have to start somewhere and sometime ,di po ba?
Noynoying for me also means the President as a regular guy- nanliligaw, nababasted, nagwawagi kung minsan, nag aambisyong magpakasal na pero di pa siniswerte, kumakanta ng awit ni Heber (‘ako ang nasisisi..ako na lang ang laging may kasalanan…’), mahilig sa magandang kotse (masama ba?), mahilig mag target shooting (masama ba?), sumasablay sa trabaho magkaminsan(tao lang), di gaanong mag- inarte (cool sya), mapagmahal sa pamilya (kina kris, ate ballsy at iba pa), and in my heart of hearts, I know that he has love for our people and is dead- serious in pursuing what he has started in his administration for our countrymen.
Ang akin lang, let us not be so judgmental of people. No, I don’t think it’s part of the territory either- making hasty and unfounded judgments has never been part of any territory.
THANK YOU PO, TORONTO!
