By | May 13, 2023

Autism, or clinically known as autism spectrum disorder or ASD, is a developmental disorder with symptoms that appear within the first three years of life. Autism appears in different forms with varying levels of severity and each person with autism experiences their own unique strengths, symptoms, and challenges. Psychiatrists and clinicians recognize two main symptoms of autism: (a) deficit in social communication and interaction, and (b) restricted, repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities. These symptoms appear early in a child’s development, and it is diagnosed when symptoms cause developmental challenges that are not better explained by other conditions. Please note that only a qualified medical professional can diagnose ASD.

Autism is a lifelong condition and there are variety of treatments available that can help support people with ASD. Early intervention delivers the best results. Parents and caregivers should seek the advice of a qualified medical professional before starting any treatment. Most importantly, understanding more about ASD can help families and caregivers to better understand people who are living with it.

Jake’s House is one of the organizations in Ontario where people can seek support and relevant information on ASD. Jake’s House support individuals on the spectrum throughout their lifespans through their four core initiatives: 1) Jake’s House Annual Holiday Parties, a 15-year tradition of bringing families together for a welcoming, fun and festive celebration; 2) Legends Mentoring Program, themed group mentoring workshops that provide youth with opportunities to learn skills, socialize and make friends; 3) Jake’s House Employment Mentoring, a program that supports the integration of young adults into the workforce; and 4) inclusive housing solutions, designed to address the growing housing gap in the autism community, giving more aging adults a place to call home.
