Four Tips on Overcoming Fear with Poise

By | April 2, 2011

Everyone experiences fear. Nobody is exempted from its grip, not even those who appear brave or those who bully their way around. Fear, though unwanted in our lives, is just as normal as any emotion.

As Mark Twain asserts, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear. . .” As such, fear happens in our lives as it serves a significant purpose. It saves us from real threat and warns us of potential peril that loiters in the dark.

Others however deal with fear somewhat differently. They let fear or the source of fear dominate their lives, leaving them with miserable, distressful, and chaotic existence. As a result, they dread every day of their lives.

How can you overcome fear so you can live life free of anguish?

First, know the cause

Determine the possible causes of your fear. Is your fear triggered by your spouse’s abusive, violent behavior? Are you frightened when you see mounting bills hidden in your drawer? Are you afraid of your domineering boss or disruptive coworker?

To address your fear, you must know the cause. And decide to face it head on and solve it. The longer you delay, the more problem you will face and the more terrified you will become.

Second, educate yourself

Get as much information as possible about the source of your fear. For instance if you fear mounting bills, then learn more about your expenses and your income that can’t sustain it. Analyze your bank statements. Read books on finances and investments.

Surf online for credible sources. Through Google, information is just a blink away. And you’ll find many articles, blogs, forums, and organizations that can help you address your fear. If this is not enough, you may ask for expert advice.

Third, get support

In challenging times, your family’s support is crucial. Your family can provide the comfort you vitally need when chaos and confusion can’t let go of you. Your family can be the sole source of strength when you’re facing a brick wall. If your family is far away, then you should recruit the allegiance of trusted, loyal friends and get them on your side. Share your fear and get their feedback. Having someone to talk to should calm the turbulent emotions within you.

Fourth, cope through positive action

When you feel scared, your body confirms it. Your heart races and your chest tightens. If you let fear take over for a while, you may even experience severe, sustained headache, muscle tension, and stomach distress. Also, fear may cloud your thinking and thus distort your decisions.

Deal with fear using known techniques. Relax your mind and body through meditation and breathing exercises. Be involved in various physical and recreational activities. Walking, jogging, and running don’t cost much but are vitally important in renewing your health.

Moreover, it’s important to socialize. Join a few social networks, such as nonprofit organizations and support groups, in your community. In times of difficulties, sometimes it’s healthy to focus on others. Help someone in need. Volunteer your services and expertise, and join organizations that extend assistance to the less fortunate. You will soon realize that your situation is not as bad as you think it is.

Also, pray with all your might. Believe me, it helps.

In summary, overcoming fear only requires your resolve to address it. It’s critical to know the cause of your fear, get the necessary information and use it, obtain support of family and friends, and cope with fear through positive action.
