Since 1963, Good Shepherd Ministries has been a beacon of hope on Queen Street East, offering warmth, dignity, and compassion to people who are hungry, homeless, or suffering. What began as a small effort providing free hot meals and shelter beds has grown into one of Toronto’s most trusted and transformative community organizations. Over the decades, Good Shepherd has expanded its programs to meet the evolving needs of the city’s most vulnerable residents, always guided by the same mission: to welcome all with hospitality, respect, and unconditional care.
Today, Good Shepherd is far more than a meal program or shelter—it is a lifeline. People still come for food, clothing, and a safe place to sleep, but they also find help navigating housing challenges, accessing onsite medical care, and beginning recovery from addictions. The Drug and Alcohol Recovery Enrichment (DARE) Program offers homeless men a stable, supportive environment as they prepare for treatment, providing counselling, daily structure, and essential resources. The 128-bed shelter operates at full capacity year-round, ensuring that men experiencing homelessness have a clean bed, showers, toiletries, and breakfast each morning. In 2025 alone, Good Shepherd served an extraordinary 376,473 meals—upwards of 1,000 every single day—making it the largest free meal program in Toronto.
Good Shepherd’s commitment to dignity extends across a wide range of services designed to prevent homelessness and rebuild lives. The Eviction Prevention Program, launched in 2022, supports low-income individuals and families at risk of losing their housing, including newcomers, youth aging out of care, people leaving hospitals or correctional facilities, and those displaced by emergencies. Since 2010, Good Shepherd has also worked closely with homeless Veterans, helping them secure housing, access addiction treatment, build life skills, and connect with community supports. With the addition of a Veterans Housing Navigation team and peer support worker, the organization continues to ensure that those who served Canada receive the care and respect they deserve.
At the heart of all these programs is Good Shepherd’s unwavering belief in human dignity. Whether someone needs a hot meal, clean clothes, medical attention, spiritual care, or simply a compassionate listener, they are welcomed without judgment and treated with respect. The Pastoral Care Program embodies this spirit, offering presence, support, referrals, hospital and prison visits, end-of-life care, and spiritual guidance. For many, Good Shepherd is the first place where they feel seen, valued, and understood—a place where the invisible and vulnerable come first.
This work is only possible because of the generosity of supporters, volunteers, and community partners. Every donation—no matter the size—helps provide meals, shelter, addiction recovery support, medical care, and pathways to stable housing. Volunteers play a vital role too, serving meals, offering companionship, and helping maintain the warm, welcoming environment that defines Good Shepherd. By giving today, you help ensure that the light of hope continues to shine for thousands of people facing poverty, homelessness, and hardship.
