For centuries, missionaries have played a vital role in shaping communities around the world through faith, service, and sacrificial love. At their core, missionaries are individuals who respond to God’s call to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ—often crossing cultures, borders, and comfort zones to do so. Their work is rooted in the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18–20, where Jesus commands His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations.” Historically, missionary movements trace back to the early church, but they expanded significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries as Christian organizations sent workers to Asia, Africa, and the Americas. These men and women not only preached the Gospel but also established schools, hospitals, and community programs that continue to impact societies today.
In the Philippines, the legacy of missionary work remains strong, carried forward by dedicated workers such as Al and Sonie Tadeo, Filipino missionaries who began their ministry journey under Action International Ministries (ACTION). Commissioned by The Peoples Church Toronto in 2015, the Tadeos returned to the Philippines to serve with Support A Child, Serve A Future (SCSF), a local nonprofit based in Cubao, Quezon City led by Dave and Becky Majam. Their mission is simple yet profound: to minister to the poor, uplift communities, and share the hope of Christ through both word and deed.
Over the years, Al and Sonie have helped strengthen several life-changing programs. Their Educational Assistance Ministry supports out-of-school youth and adults through the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in partnership with the Department of Education, offering a flexible pathway to complete basic education while integrating weekly devotions and Gospel teaching. Their Scholarship Program currently supports 13 deserving students pursuing higher education. Alongside this, their Feeding Program—powered by partnerships with Ontario Christian Gleaners in Canada and Mana-Pak Rice in Minnesota—now reaches 20 feeding sites across the Philippines, nourishing nearly 2,000 children while sharing the Gospel two to three times a week. They also engage in evangelism, street-children outreach, and disaster relief whenever resources allow.
Behind their ministry is the global support structure of Action International Ministries, a mission agency founded in 1974 with roots tracing back to earlier ministries in Manila. ACTION’s vision is to send multinational workers who treasure Christ and serve the poor through evangelism, discipleship, development, and missions multiplication. With over 350 workers in more than 35 countries, ACTION continues to build on a legacy that began in 1961 with pioneers from China Inland Mission and New Tribes Mission. Today, ACTION remains committed to holistic ministry—feeding the hungry, discipling believers, strengthening churches, and mobilizing workers worldwide.
Now based in Calgary after more than 45 years in Ontario, and blessed with two children and four grandchildren, Al and Sonie continue their missionary calling with unwavering faith. Having come to Christ later in life, they understand deeply the power of transformation—and they are committed to helping others experience the same hope. Those who wish to support their ministry can donate through Action International Ministries, ensuring that more children are fed, more students are educated, and more communities hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
