Ontario is home to one of the largest and fastest-growing Filipino communities in Canada. The Greater Toronto Area alone hosts over 250,000 Filipinos, contributing to a provincial population that forms a significant share of the nearly 960,000 Canadians of Filipino descent nationwide. This vibrant community plays an increasingly visible role in Ontario’s economic landscape—energizing sectors such as food services, retail, caregiving, logistics, and small-to-medium entrepreneurship. With Filipino Canadians known for their strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, Filipino-owned businesses continue to multiply across the province, enriching local economies and creating culturally rooted spaces for both Filipinos and the wider public.
Recognizing this rapid growth, Paulo Bucud, a community leader and entrepreneur, saw the need to unify Filipino business owners under a shared mission. In 2020, he founded Pinoy Ontario Vendors (POV)—a collective dedicated to empowering Filipino entrepreneurs, amplifying their voices, and fostering a supportive business ecosystem. Bucud’s vision was simple yet powerful: bring Filipino vendors together so they can thrive not only individually but also as a community with shared goals and shared strength.
Since its founding, POV has delivered several impactful initiatives that highlight both cultural pride and community service. Its Spring Bazaar has become a flagship event, giving Filipino vendors a platform to showcase their products and services while drawing hundreds of attendees. Beyond commerce, the bazaar also raised eight balikbayan boxes filled with Spam canned goods, which were shipped to low-income families in the Philippines—demonstrating POV’s commitment to giving back. POV also hosts an Annual BBQ, a beloved summer gathering featuring free fishball, free sorbetes, and traditional Filipino games such as patintero and piko, strengthening community bonds across generations.
Another major highlight is POV’s Gala Night, held annually with a unique theme each year. More than a celebration, the gala serves as a fundraising event for POV’s scholarship program. Today, the organization proudly supports two scholars in the Philippines, each receiving ₱10,000 per semester to pursue their education. POV also maintains an annually updated business directory, helping Filipino-owned enterprises gain visibility. Beyond its own events, POV actively participates in broader community efforts, such as the Kapatiran Canada Bowling Tournament, where they helped raise funds for typhoon victims in the Philippines.
As Filipino entrepreneurship continues to flourish in Ontario, organizations like POV play a crucial role in ensuring that growth is supported, celebrated, and sustained. You can help strengthen this growing community by showing up for POV events and choosing to support Filipino-owned businesses that continue to enrich Ontario’s cultural and economic landscape. Filipino business owners across the province are also invited to join POV—adding their voice, their vision, and their enterprise to a community committed to collective success. Today, POV proudly serves a thriving network of more than 13,000 members.
