My Yellow Brick Road

Walk-Train-Work-Train-Walk.

My days had become a sandwich. It seemed like someone had hit ‘repeat’ and had trapped me in the daily grind. I was 23, living on my own in a new city and always felt stuck in rush hour. I hadn’t been working in the corporate world that long but regardless, I felt like my life had lost the luster that it once had. I wasn’t excited at the start of a new day. The little things didn’t fascinate me anymore. I was just… working.

During that time, I had dreams of starting my own business when I moved back home to Toronto. I want to help people reach their full potential by teaching the principles of achievement, the same principles that I have used and continue to use in order to accomplish my goals in life. The only thing that I looked forward to besides the weekend was time to spend developing ideas that would help the community and also provide me with financial freedom. I dreamed of a career that I could throw my heart and soul into so that I could live an impassioned life.

Working full time, starting my own business, maintaining relationships, and exploring a new city all at the same time was exhausting! Not to mention, the negativity at the day job was becoming contagious and dangerously transferable. I was begging for more time to focus on my dreams. Thankfully, just before I completely lost my mind, I received a blessing from the universe – I was laid off! Instantly, my spirits were lifted, I skipped out of the office for the last time and took a big breath of sweet freedom. Though this may sound overly cliché, there was even a full rainbow that greeted me as I walked home from work for the last time. Now I’m well on my way to the proverbial pot of gold.

Those little bits of magic in life are not uncommon to anyone who is following their heart. I believe that when you commit to a dream and move towards it (even slowly), that it too begins to move towards you. By dreaming we magnetize ourselves to the things that we want in our lives and prepare ourselves to receive them. However simple that may seem, the fundamental problem I’ve noticed is that too many people forget about their dreams. Their true desires are lying neglected somewhere between gridlock traffic, coffee breaks and weekly progress reports.

After my short time in the rat race, I could already see how easy it would be to slip into the numbness of the dailies. It takes a lot of awareness to stay focused on the life that you’ve dreamed of if your not already living it. The first step we must take is to simply believe in our dreams again. Pay attention to them. Like any infant or seedling, dreams need nurturing. By sustaining thoughts regarding our dreams we will begin to vibrate in accordance with them and begin to attract them to us. When you’re in alignment, you will know what steps to take. Just follow the yellow brick road. Though it may take a lot of work, the effort is worth it.

Consider this: Life is made out of time. Whatever we spend our time doing, we are trading our lives to do it. The average person spends 83, 200 hours working full time assuming retirement at 65. What are you trading your life for?
