It’s Time We Do Something About Our Life

For most seniors—those of us aged sixty-five and above—living gracefully through the remaining years of life can be a real challenge. Even when we attend weddings, reunions, and social gatherings, there is often a quiet feeling that something is missing. Deep inside, we sense an unease. Our bodies remind us that we are no longer young, that we are already “over the hill,” and that time—however we understand it—continues to move steadily forward.

Physically, the changes are unmistakable. We walk more slowly, breathe more carefully, and visit our doctors more often for aches, pains, and discomforts we once ignored. In earlier years, we may have relied on “mind over matter” to push through difficulties. Now, however, our bodies send us a clearer message: this is reality, and we must face it honestly.

As we look around, we realize that many friends, relatives, former coworkers, and batchmates have already gone ahead of us—some quietly fading into memory. At such moments, we begin to count our days more thoughtfully. Yet alongside this awareness comes gratitude—gratitude that we are still alive and able to enjoy, even in small ways, the precious gift of life.

One of the hardest realities seniors face is sickness. Even a simple flu can feel overwhelming. Often, we must manage on our own. It is truly a blessing when grown children live nearby and can check on us, bring food or medicine, or help with daily tasks. But in today’s world, many of our children have families and responsibilities of their own. They are busy writing their own life stories.

When illness strikes, everything slows down. Our main focus becomes recovery. Everyday routines—cleaning the house, cooking meals, doing laundry—are temporarily set aside. For seniors, healing takes time. Sometimes weeks pass before our strength returns. During this period, we move carefully and patiently, rebuilding our energy before facing daily demands once again.

After recovery, reflection often follows. We think deeply about life—its uncertainty and fragility. We ask ourselves, Is this all life has to offer? We remember years spent building a career and working toward retirement, and we look back on a life filled with both joys and regrets. At such moments, the words of the Bible ring especially true—that many pursuits are “a striving after the wind,” and that life without deeper meaning can feel empty.

Yet the Bible also shows us how to live fully and happily despite life’s challenges and anxieties. It reminds us that “happy are those conscious of their spiritual need” (Matthew 5:3). Without recognizing and addressing this spiritual need, lasting happiness remains beyond our reach.

When we look at the world today, we see problems everywhere—violence, wars, disease, natural disasters, hunger, and uncertainty. The future can appear bleak. Still, the Holy Scriptures offer genuine hope. They assure us that God will not allow worsening world conditions to continue forever.

The Bible promises that God will intervene in human affairs by establishing a Kingdom “that will never be brought to ruin” (Daniel 2:44). This is the Kingdom we are taught to pray for in the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9, 10). It is not a vague idea or merely a feeling in the heart; it is a real government that will bring lasting solutions to humanity’s problems.

Through this Kingdom, God will “bring to ruin those ruining the earth” (Revelation 11:18). For those who obey Him, He will “wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither mourning nor outcry nor pain anymore” (Revelation 21:4).

Why do we need God to intervene in human affairs? Because no human effort—despite advances in science and technology—has been able to provide lasting solutions to the problems we face: escalating violence, worsening economic conditions, devastating natural disasters, sickness, and even death.

True hope comes from recognizing our spiritual need and placing our trust in God’s promised Kingdom.

So, my friends, while there is still time, let us make good use of the days ahead.

When Jehovah’s Witnesses knock on your door during their house-to-house ministry, do not hesitate to ask them to show you from the Bible answers to life’s important questions:
Who is God?
Who is Jesus Christ?
What is the Kingdom of God?
What does the future hold?
Why are we here?
What happens at death?
Why is there suffering?
What is God doing to end it?
And how can we enjoy a truly happy family life?

The Bible offers meaningful answers—and a hope that reaches far beyond the present.
