No doubt, this Eala Mania is sweeping the world of women’s tennis.
With the Filipino diaspora, millions of our countrymen spread all over the world are zealously supporting Alex Eala, the 21-year-old Filipino professional tennis player, in her quest not only to be a big success in her career but also to put the Philippines on the world map of tennis.
There seems to be no stopping the support for her; our countrymen are becoming noisier and more active in showing their determined backing by attending Eala’s games in person and buying those costly tickets.
Mind you, her supporters have come from different countries, filling up stadiums to see their idol competing. They are storming the high heavens through their initiative in using social media, Facebook, and Messenger to make their presence felt in the world.
But Eala’s recent loss in the WTA National Bank Open in Toronto was to be expected because, in one of her games, she had a minor ankle and foot scare, and the match had to be stopped for a while due to a medical emergency; her foot had to be bandaged.
From my personal observation, minutes before her match with Bencic, Eala looked tired; she seemed not to be 100 percent physically fit to play that game. Well, Eala lost the game in two straight sets.
Despite her loss, the Filipino fans still showed their full support to Eala, cheering and shouting, “We love you, Alex.”
Despite her loss to Bencic, Eala was given a standing ovation by her Filipino fans as she left the Sobeys Center court because they didn’t mind her loss; to them, she was still the winner who had given her best to make them proud.
These fans could relate to Eala’s experience because, as immigrants in Canada, they too experienced hardships and challenges; their lives are up and down, but they didn’t give up. They just kept on moving on and on, and that is “That’s Life as the song says.
Looking back, Eala should be commended for giving her best to win those big games in the 2026 Washington DC Open, thereby claiming her WTA title. To prove that she is a real tennis pro, she is doing her job. Alex, without having enough rest, proceeded to play here in Toronto to compete again for the WTA 1000 Open.
Eala’s recent loss in the Toronto WTA 1000 Open is a blessing in disguise. Although she was physically and emotionally tired, caused by the challenging 7-straight-win streak in playing tennis against top-seeded players in Washington, DC and here in Toronto, she now has time to relax for a while, take some time off and ready herself for the forthcoming games set in Cincinnati and New York in the coming months.
Playing professional games like tennis is like living life itself—you win some, you lose some.
It’s life’s journey: meeting challenges and anxieties, and at times you feel strong or weak, but as they say, the show must go on; you have to be in the field, on the ground, competing, giving your very best, whatever the situation you find yourself in.
In short, Eala fans should continue walking with her, supporting her all the way as she journeys toward the game of tennis. Remember, Eala represents not only herself but also the whole Philippines as she dreams big of making a name in the world of tennis.
With what Eala has been doing in tennis, competing from different cities and countries, showing her depth, grit and skills, it’s good not to dwell on possible losses she might encounter, simply because they are part of the game of tennis.
Eala is right now radically changing the landscape of the tennis world; she’s not only taking her fans to the games but also bringing joy and the fans’ energy that make watching the games more exciting and alive.
